If you haven’t met me before, I write picture books. I don’t illustrate.
I like drawing but haven’t really had the opportunity or the time to do more. After going to a few classes on illustrating during the CYA Conference last week, I thought I’d move my rusty old hand and try a little sketch. I tried illustrating one of my picture books.

Going colour was a whole new ball game and I was worried I’d stuff it up but Karen from Sugar Bird Art uses colour pencils in her stunning pictures so I really wanted to give it a try.
His name is Cornelius and he’s a little scared of heights. Do you like him? How do you think I did?
Joining up with Trish’s Wordless Wednesday

OMG Penny!
This is fantastic!!
If this is your first attempt, then I can’t wait to see what you produce after some practise!
Love Cornelius…..he’s lovely!

Thanks so much Tracey. I am pretty happy with him considering it was my first real go at an illustration.
Cornelius is a cutie patootie, Penny! I think you’re did just great!
I’m completely hopeless at drawing. I love how you’re going out there and giving it a real go. Well done x

I love that pet name. Cuite Patootie. I can feel a PB coming on!
I think you have done an amazing job Pen. I love how the photos here depict your progression – the color definitely adds life and her face….adorable!

Thanks Kirri. I’m fairly happy with him. I do wish I drew him on better quality paper though. The girls love him and I would have loved to frame him and put him in the study so they could still see it and also he could give me some encouragement to keep drawing!
Wow – this is great! Wow – your ‘rusty hand’ is amazing!
How exciting for you!

Thank B. My rusty hand wasn’t so rusty after all.
You managed to convey his scared expression so well! Cornelius looks like a dear little thing! If this is your first attempt then I can’t wait to see more!

Thanks Misha. I intend to do more! I just have to find the time. It’s hard enough with three kids, twon blogs and trying to find time for PB writing. I would like to keep practising though.
wow! Your drawings are beautiful so indepth!
Teach me how to draw please ~ you get sick n tired of doing stick figures lol *sigh*
Thanks Dannie. I use to be a crap drawer. Seriously. One day I’ll post one of my pictures that I drew before I got better. It just takes practise… well kind of. I don’t know how I’ve been able to still do a decent drawing. I honestly haven’t drawn much (other than little cartoon animals and shapes for the kids) since I was in high school.
I love him! Absolutely love him. Well done you

Thanks so much Rhianna. I’m glad you like him. Hopefully you see a few more sketchs with STT from now on.
You are amazing! Great art work. Rachel x

Thank you Rachel. I really enjoyed drawing it. Plus, I have a thing for owls. Too cute!
Oh my gosh he is so cute! Well done, you’ve done a fantastic job. Thanks for sharing x
Kelly @ HT&T recently posted..Wordless Wednesday: Waddles
Thanks so much Kelly. I’m pretty happy with him. Now I just have to practise Cornelius from other view points. I’m sure it’s easy to draw him from one perspective but to get his character from all other angles. That’s going to be hard I think.
So beautiful.. You got the look on his face just right. You go girl!!!! And thank you for mentioning me
Glad I could help in some lillte way to get you back into drawing

Your pictures are so lovely Karen. You can see I have a very different drawing style from you but I’m glad I gave the coloured pencils a go. I need to practise blending the colours using pencils. You’re so good at that! What brand pencils do you use?
Hi there Penny. Thank you for your lovely words
I LOVE shading, it is so much fun!!! I mainly use Faber Castel and Dewent, but have been know to steal pencils from my 9 year old because the colour caught my eye
Fantastic illustrations. You have no worries there

Thanks so much for visiting Trish. I know your going through a lot and so it means so much to me. I just love Karen’s drawings. So pretty.
That’s awesome Penny! You should definitely do more of it!

I appreciate your visit Cathy. With such nice responses I’m most certainly going to be drawing more.
I love it, especially once you’ve added the colour – it’s perfect!

Thank honey. Yeah, I like how he turned out. I do wish I had more time to devote to drawing and writing. There’s just never enough time!
Woman, you are talented! Try scanning this too and with your vectoring skills, imagine what you can do!!!

Thanks Kris. I didn’t even thinks of trying to go over it vector. How cool would that be!
Problem is Avairy is about to stop doing vector apparently. I’m devestated because I’m finally comfortable with it. I’ve just downloaded drawplus and I’ll give that one a go. I hope it won’t be to hard to get my head around.
I did this with pen and paper then scanned it and coloured it
